Pruning for Utah trees

Good pruning removes deadwood, opens the crown so wet spring snow does not snap it, and lifts limbs off the roof and driveway. It never means topping. A topped tree regrows as a cluster of weak shoots that break off in the next storm.

When to prune

Late winter, while most deciduous trees are dormant, is the best time for structural work. Deadwood and clearance cuts can happen any time of year.

Tree Trimming & Pruning questions

Should I top my tree to make it smaller?

No. Topping leaves a cluster of weak shoots that grow back fast and break in the next storm. Crown reduction cuts back to healthy side branches and keeps the tree’s structure.
